Just a Single Page Website: 3 Reasons Why It Can Work For Your Idea

One thing I love about the Internet is how it perennially exists in a state of evolution, adopting new ideas and discarding ones which have ceased to work.

Another concept which is being heavily challenged by the rise of the touch-screen device is traditional menu and multiple-page based website design. Given that a significant amount of web browsing is done on screens of ever shrinking sizes, this doesn’t really work as well as it used to.

Enter The Single Page Layout

The single page layout is one which eschews having multiple pages, each encapsulating a piece of text or some media. Instead, we use a single continuous page which contains absolutely everything.

This design paradigm has found countless fans within the web developer community, and has found itself used in a variety of settings, including marketing pages and personal portfolios Making Your Own Website: Your Career Will Thank You Later A personal website is probably one of the biggest aspects of your online presence. Sure other areas such as social networks and blogs are important, but your website is like a home base – a. Read More . This adulation has had the effect of spawning countless Javascript libraries, which make it easy to create single page websites (of which my favorite is fullPage.js). But why? What makes this paradigm work? Here are three reasons why.

You Can Create A Narrative

Don’t be confused. Stories are everything. Take, for example, Apple’s official website for the iPhone 5s. This uses the single page paradigm to its fullest, and shows how you can create a captivating story with using this design paradigm.

When we first browse to the iPhone 5s’s official site, we are first told that the iPhone 5s is ‘Forward Thinking’. As we scroll down, we are told that Apple’s latest Instagram device has been meticulously considered and precision crafted. As we scroll down further, more information about the design and development of the phone is unveiled, painting a picture of vigilant craftsmanship and quality. Eventually the page reaches its climax, and we see its call to action, where we are told how we can buy this miracle device. Would we be able to create the same flowing, linear narrative if we were using separate, individual web pages? Perhaps not.

Perhaps my favorite example of how the single page layout can be used to tell tales is seen on jessandruss.us. This site was created to invite their friends and family to their wedding, and uses parallax scrolling and all kinds of javascript trickery to tell their story of how they met and fell in love. It’s ridiculously charming, and you totally should have a look.

It Will Make Your Copy Better (And Your Readers Will Love It)

I did some web design consultancy recently. The customer I was working with wanted a website being created for their small business. He had emailed me a 365mb ZIP file which contained a massive cache of photos and copy. I’m not just talking about information that was immediately pertinent to the business, but a biography about each individual staff member. Company news. Just… Fluff.

My immediate reaction was ‘his customers don’t care about this’! I was also concerned about how it would effect the layout and flow of his webpage, which was using a one page design. After a bit of negotiation, he acquiesced and let me take a sharp knife to his copy where I took great pleasure in exorcising all extraneous blubber.

The end result was that his website only offered information that the customer would find useful, and nothing else. Choosing a single page design forced us to write copy that was incredibly concise and as a result, phenomenally readable.

It Works Well On Mobile Devices

Confession time: I have fat fingers.

Seriously, I do. At times, they look more like Vienna sausages than they do actual human appendages. As a result, browsing the Internet from the modest screen of a mobile device often sends me into fits of tumultuous rage, as I frequently click links I didn’t intend to by accident.

This rage is compounded when I come across most website navigation bars which simply don’t work on mobile devices. Some simply aren’t optimized for smaller screens. Perhaps the worst navigation offender is where menus exist buried within menus, and can only be reached by hovering with your mouse on an area of the page. As you can imagine, this doesn’t work on touch-screen devices.

Simply put, the old paradigms of website navigation no longer work as well as they used to. The beauty of single page web design is that it reduces navigation to one of two directions – up or down. On most mobile devices, this can be expressed by a single push of your finger in either direction, resulting in navigation that is incredibly intuitive.

Conclusion

I’m quite fond of single page websites. As a natural storyteller, I love how they make it easy to construct engaging narratives which immediately grab the attention of the reader. If you’re looking for inspiration, check out One Page Love, which is a comprehensive compendium of websites using this captivating paradigm.

ENVIRONMENT

The environmental crisis – number one international problem.

We are in the environmental crisis because human beings have broken out the circle of life and are destroying the environment. Overpopulation, industrialization, urbanization and environmental pollution have disastrous effects on nature and wildlife.

The first threat to the planet is the extinction of plants and animal life. Many animals find it more and more difficult to survive as their natural habitat is being destroyed by growing cities. The earth forested areas are in danger of disappearing completely as trees are burnt or cut down. Illegal hunting threatens some rare species to become extinct. This process can be controlled if we protect animals in danger by law, open more parks and plant more forests; introduce harsher punishment for illegal hunters and raise public awareness about endangered species.

The second problem is water, air and soil pollution. Factories and cars release poisonous chemicals into the air. The chemicals mix with the water in the clouds, and the polluted rain which falls later damages everything alive. Gases from aerosol sprays and fridges go into the atmosphere destroying theozone layer which prevents us from getting harmful radiation. As a result more and more people get skin cancer. Our society is producing too much packaging and food waste; that is why diseases spread fast. People use a lot of detergents for cleaning their houses and cars, this wasted water is poured into rivers, oceans and streams killing marine life. A few steps can help to change the situation. We must throw away less rubbish; use recycling and control the usage of water and electicity.

Deforestation, using aerosols and burning fossil fuels cause the process of Global Warming (Greenhouse Effect). This environmental change leads to rising temperatures, melting ice-caps in the polar region and droughts and floods.

These problems are very serious. Both scientists and politicians agree that unless some radical steps are taken in the nearest future, life on our planet may be destroyed.

Here are some of the ways to solve ecological problems. Express your own opinion if they are helpful or not:

    • The factories and plants must be removed from cities
    • Green zones must be created. The greenery must be protected and increased
    • Pollution control systems must be introduced
    • Purifying systems for cleaning and trapping harmful substances must be widely used
    • Noise must be reduced
    • We must keep the streets of towns clean
    • We must utilize and recycle the waste
    • People must develop international cooperation in the field of environmental protection

Why Cryptonetworks Are Eating the World

Decentralization in the Ecosystem Economy

In 2020, Marc Andreessen wrote about why software is eating the world . Business models across industries were being challenged by software, yet tech companies under-appreciated by institutional investors, and people asking “Isn’t this just a dangerous new bubble?” — sounds familiar?

The Ecosystem Economy

Despite the doubts, technology has been killing corporations ever since: The average lifespan of S&P 500 companies has dropped from 61 to just 18 years in past 60 years. Nowadays, 50% of global annual company revenues come from products launched within just the past 3 years.

Dominant businesses used to be resources, products and services companies. New business models that allow companies to stay relevant in the long run have been emerging though. With iTunes and the App Store, platform businesses started to take over, where value is created by facilitating exchange between interdependent groups, usually consumers and producers. And since Uber & AirBnB, exponential organization models are spreading, where new organizational techniques & technologies are used to create output from owned assets 10x larger compared to peers.

The Ecosystem Economy is the next step in this evolution: Companies start integrating core business functionalities with 3rd party networks & platforms. This allows them to scale faster and on-demand, benefit from economies of scale beyond their own organizational boundaries, and potentially get access otherwise inaccessible resources.

Changing Business Models

The impact of this evolution of business models can be easily observed. If you compare the top 10 companies by market cap from 10 years ago to today, you’ll see that the number of companies that have a platform business model and/or are exponential organizations have increased from just 1 to 7 of them. And looking at private companies, 4 of today’s top 5 unicorn startups are as well (ByteDance, Uber, AirBnB, & Didi Chuxing).

Even though the Ecosystem Economy are the youngest of these models and most ecosystems aren’t even fully accessible yet, some companies are already seeing 5% or more revenue growth from ecosystem participation. The study’s authors expect that 5 years from now, 80% of the S&P 500 will be engaged in multiple industry ecosystems, and that in 7 years’ time, an industry leader from today will have transformed into a pure ecosystem company spanning multiple markets.

From Centralized to Decentralized

As Chris Burniske recently put it, cryptonetworks are not companies. They are one of the three types of ecosystems that will be powering the Ecosystem Economy though:

  1. Centralized: Created and run by a company; these are the platform businesses of the tech platform and gig economy companies.
  2. Federated: Developed by industry consortia; trusted networks based on (permissioned) blockchain solutions.
  3. Decentralized: Cryptonetworks; emerging economies using a protocol in place of governance, each specializing in a single service

The three aren’t mutually exclusive. Centralized ecosystems have been created and established by the big tech companies, federated ones are being created by groups of industry players right now (although slowly), and decentralized ones are at the tipping point of becoming mainstream.

There is a natural push away from centralized to federated and eventually decentralized supporting cryptonetworks: No one wants a competitor to run the ecosystem, consortia take a lot of time, and after a few data privacy scandals, at least a little fewer people trust 3rd parties with their personal data. In short, ecosystems require trust, and the ability to create trust limits an ecosystem’s reach and makes adoption slow and tiresome. Decentralized ecosystems on the other hand work under the premise of being trustless (i.e. working without trust) and able to scale from day one.

Growth at Stake

The need for new ecosystems that are accessible at scale from day one is more relevant that how it might appear at first. What’s at stake is not just some marginal value improvement, but our ability to sustain scientific progress and economic growth. Today, more and more of our thinking is happening in parallel, driven by a highly educated and specialized global society, e.g. 90% of PhDs that have ever lived are alive right now. At the same time though, R&D productivity is decreasing exponentially (a phenomenon called “Eroom’s” law, a backwards-reading of “Moore’s” law), which is especially devastating in drug research.

With efficiencies lost synchronizing our efforts, productivity constantly decreasing, and only so much more resources available to invest, we‘re at risk of hitting a ceiling soon. We need to become more efficient at collaborating, and to do so, we need to build and tap into these new ecosystems.
